Week 5
Finally started summer camp today! I am helping teach a camp called Water Water Everywhere. It has been a lot of fun finally getting to move around and interact with kids. I am teaching first graders, so they are adorable and a lot of fun. They started off very shy and quiet, but became energetic and crazy after snack time and once they became a little comfortable. One of my favorite parts of this class is that there is a little girl who predominantly speaks Spanish and does not follow English very well. I am getting to experience what has been talked about in so many UFTeach readings about learning disabilities and cultural differences and teaching students with different backgrounds. It is definitely a challenge making sure this student knows what to do, but I was doing pretty well I think. It helps a lot to use visuals when explaining things to her. Plus, I am currently taking accelerated Spanish here at UF so I get to practice what I am learning in that class, so it is fun. I am excited for the rest of the week of camp!

That sounds like so much fun! I miss working at summer camps; it's a lot of work but little kids are so much fun! That's great that you're able to relate things that we've learned in UF Teach to work. It's nice to know that what you're learning can be used in the real world. I hope camp goes well for the rest of the week, I'm sure it will!
ReplyDeleteI love working with younger kids, especially with interactive camps! This sounds like a blast and somewhat of what I'm getting to do at my museum internship, except you get to really get to know your kids. I look forward to hearing more about all these experiences you are having with the campers!
ReplyDeleteMax that class sounds like so much fun, and the opportunity to work with the little girl is great! I remember being in first grade and not knowing a lick of English its very easy to get distracted and the fear of embarrassment will keep her from participating. Its nice to see you take initiative and help her out in an area that your not entirely trained in. Keep up the good work!
ReplyDeleteThat's pretty cool what you said about Spanish... I actually took that class last semester, and had to use it today at the aquarium! That's the nice thing about foreign language--you will more than likely be presented with an opportunity to use it!
